Coronary artery bypass grafting is an open heart procedure which restores the blood flow to the heart. Basis the angiogram, the cardiologist and the cardiothoracic surgeon decides whether the patient would benefit more from Angioplasty or Bypass surgery.
Generally, patients with severe Coronary heart disease are advised surgery.
In CABG, the cardiothoracic surgeon creates a graft on the blocked or the thinned blood vessel, with the help of the radial or the peripheral artery. The surgery is a 7-8 hour surgery or more depending on the number of grafts required and the medical condition of the patient.
