Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion
Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion is performed in patients suffering from severe neck pain or arm pain. An MRI / CT scan is then recommended to diagnose the cause of pain. If, the investigation report show pinged nerve along with herniated / degenerated disc, the surgeon recommends discectomy with fusion.
Here, the compressed nerve is released and the herniated disc is removed, a graft is then inserted to fuse the bones and the disc below. Patient needs to undergo thorough physiotherapy.

When does one need an Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion?
When a patient is suffering from neck / arm pain and investigations are suggestive of compressed cervical nerve / herniated disc then the surgeon would recommend Anterior Cervical Discectomy with Fusion. Surgery is recommended only if the patient has undergone extensive physiotherapy, and medications have not made much of a difference.
Some patients may require only Discectomy and no fusion is recommend. The procedure of only replacing the herniated disc is also known as Cervical Laminectomy.
