Coronary Angioplasty (PTCA)

Angioplasty is a procedure which is advised if the angiography reports reveal coronary artery disease. This means, there is either thinning of the blood vessels or clogged arteries. In both the cases the blood flow is restricted to the heart.

Angioplasty opens the blocked arteries and restores the blood flow to the heart muscles. It is carried out through the artery of the groin or the wrist. A balloon tipped catheter is inserted to enlarge the thinned / narrowed artery or the blocked artery. The balloon is then inflated to open the artery and a stent is placed so that the blood flow is restored.

Sometimes the cardiologist may only perform balloon angioplasty without using a stent, this decision will be after angiography or sometimes on table while performing angioplasty.

When does one need Angiography?

When you have symptoms such as angina pain, breathlessness and chest pain on exertion or at rest; if your stress test is positive for heart disease, and / or ECG shows changes, then your cardiologist would advise you to undergo Coronary angiography depending on the overall medical parameters.

The symptoms may differ from patient to patient. Some patients may be asymptomatic but still be diagnosed of a heart condition on a routine medical examination.
