ORIF is done in case of a fractured bone or incorrectly healed fracture which was initially managed with a cast. The surgery is done in 2 stages.
First Stage:
In the first stage the bone is reduced to the required length and put back in place.
Second Stage:
In the second stage a device is used to join edges of the bone, then screws and plates are used to hold the broken bone together.

When does one need ORIF?
ORIF is primarily an emergency procedure. Mainly, in RTA (road traffic accident) or trauma cases this surgery is done to operate on the fractured injuries. ORIF technique or approach will differ with the type of fracture or injury. The surgeon will have to study the MRI / Scans thoroughly before he proceeds with the surgery.
