Scoliosis is a condition wherein a spine has a sideways curve towards the left or right, forming a C or S shape. It can appear at any age as the child grows, from the age of 8 to 12. Causes of scoliosis are mostly unknown however in some cases it may be a result of muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy, spinal degeneration, or congenital defect. A child having mild symptoms is required to be closely monitored and needs to get an X-ray done at frequent intervals, to keep a check if the spinal curve is worsening.
General categories of Scoliosis: Structural and non-structural scoliosis
Structural / Idiopathic Scoliosis occurs mostly due to an unknown cause. It may also be a cause of muscular dystrophy cerebral palsy or congenital defect. Non-structural scoliosis is temporary and may disappear with age.
